Fraunhofer IIS Showcases AI-Powered Audio Codecs at CES 2026

Fraunhofer IIS, the world's foremost research institution for audio and multimedia technology, turned heads at CES 2026 with a range of groundbreaking AI-powered audio solutions. The demonstrations highlighted how artificial intelligence is being used to revolutionize both communication and entertainment audio.

A major highlight was the 'NESC' AI-based voice codec, specifically designed for low-bandwidth satellite communication. By using neural networks to reconstruct speech, NESC provides clear, natural-sounding audio at bitrates previously thought impossible. Fraunhofer also showcased the latest version of MPEG-H Audio, featuring improved personalization options for immersive soundscapes in home theater and mobile environments.

Furthermore, the institution demonstrated xHE-AAC and LC3plus, providing high-quality streaming and wireless audio for the next generation of consumer electronics. These technologies are poised to set the standard for audio quality in everything from smartphones to global digital radio broadcasts.

"AI is opening new doors for what we can achieve with audio compression," said a Fraunhofer IIS spokesperson. "Our latest codecs aren't just about efficiency; they're about enhancing the human experience of sound in every environment."
