Fraunhofer IIS Showcases Ultra-Efficient AI-Based Codecs at Satellite Asia 2026
Fraunhofer IIS exhibited at Satellite Asia 2026 in Singapore from May 20-22, 2026, located in Hall 4 at the German Pavilion (Booth 4K2-5), showcasing ultra-efficient AI-based codecs for audio and media targeting satellite and bandwidth-constrained applications.
Key technologies on display included NESC, an ultra-efficient AI-based voice codec designed for direct-to-device satellite communication operating at bitrates of 1 kbit/s or less to enable robust voice transmission over GEO, MEO, and LEO satellite constellations. Fraunhofer IIS also demonstrated xHE-AAC for audio streaming and JPEG XS for video transmission over IP. A technology preview of NCVC, an AI-based video codec designed to enable smooth video conferencing at ultra-low bitrate and low latency over narrow-band transmission links, was also presented to attendees.
